Historical information

The Department of Analytical Chemistry was established in 1921, the year the Kharkiv Pharmaceutical Institute was founded.

Historical information

From 1921 to 1944 the department was headed by Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor M.P. Krasovsky. The general scientific direction of the department in the 20-30’s was qualitative and quantitative analysis of medicines and research of oils in vegetable raw materials. The range of scientific interests of Professor M.P. Krasovsky and his students were extraordinarily broad: they studied the qualitative composition of Slavic saline solutions and developed methods for the purification of salt at salt mills, studied flax, mustard, cocoa, mint, and other oils. From September 1941 to 1944, the department of CFI was in evacuation and continued teaching and scientific activities. From 1944 to 1967 the department was headed by Professor V.G. Gurevich. Under his leadership, the staff of the department was engaged in the analysis of drugs by oxidimetric methods, colorimetric determination of trace elements. In the 70’s and early 80’s the staff of the department was led by associate professors A.O. Holtman (1967-1969) and Z.I. Eriomina (1969-1975) introduced innovation into the educational process, namely, moving from high-quality macro-analysis to semi-micro-analysis, which made it easier to work and significantly save reagents. The scientific direction of the department is the development of rapid methods of analysis of multicomponent dosage forms, analysis of pharmaceuticals.

Historical information

In 1978, the Department of Analytical Chemistry was merged with the Department of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry. The chair was headed by Professor V.D. Bezugly is a world-renowned scientist, a specialist in many fields of physical and analytical chemistry. He initiated a new method – analytical electrochemistry of polymers, developed a technology for the indication of radioactive radiation, and made a significant contribution to the theory of polarography. This is a new area of research, very modern for the period, which required special equipment and some expertise.

Historical information

From 1982 to 1998 the head of the department was Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology O.M. Haidukevych. Professor O.M. Haidukevych established a scientific school of researchers in the field of synthesis and analysis of biologically active substances. Scientific researches of the department staff are reflected in a number of PhD theses: K.V. Dynnyk (1986); O.O. Kravchenko (1987); G.P. Kazakov (1988); G. Sim (1989); O.Ye. Mykytenko (1990); S.V. Kolisnyk (1992); Mohammed Mohmud Barak (1992); M.Yu. Golik (1994); T.A. Kostina (1996); I.Yu. Petukhova (1996).

Historical information

At this time the department taught the following disciplines: “Analytical Chemistry” for domestic and foreign students of specialty “Pharmacy” and “Analytical Chemistry and instrumental methods of analysis” for the specialty “Industrial Pharmacy”; new courses are being read: “Express methods of analysis (quality control of medicines)” and “Analysis of low concentrations (homeopathy in pharmacy)” for students within the specialization program.

Since 1998, the Department of Analytical Chemistry has been headed by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, Honored Inventor of Ukraine, Honorary Professor of NUPh V.V. Bolotov. The department began to develop a new area of research – chemical and toxicological studies of drugs.

In 1998-1999, new supplementary analytical chemistry programs were developed for students of all specialties and forms of education, a work program for the specialty “Technology of perfumery and cosmetics” was created, taking into account the profiling of training, approved typical programs in analytical chemistry for the specialty “Pharmacy” and “Industrial Pharmacy”, “Industrial Biotechnology”, “Clinical Pharmacy”. Tutorials, lecture notes, an analytical chemistry workshop, and a reference book “Analytical Chemistry in Schemes and Tables” were created. Since September 2002, teaching of analytical chemistry in English has begun. Under the guidance of prof. Bolotov V.V. Candidate’s Degrees (V.P. Moroz (2000); E.Yu. Akhmedov (2003); L.Yu. Klimenko (2007)) and Doctoral Theses (O.M. Svechnikov (1999); S.V. Kolisnyk (2012)). The degree of Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences was obtained by: О.А. Bryzitsky (2008, headed by Professor Svechnikova O.M.) and O.O. Altukhov (2011, Head Associate Professor Kolisnyk S.V.).

In 2012 – 2016 The department was headed by Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, prof. Evtifeeva O.A. – Specialist in the field of standardization and metrology of pharmaceutical analysis.

Historical information

From June 2016 till now the department is headed by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine, Laureate of State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology Ivan Semenovych Grytsenko. Experienced specialist with extensive management experience, who worked for many years in management positions of NUPh – Vice-rector for scientific work (2003-2005), first pro-rector of NUPh (2005-2014).

The department continues to develop the following areas of scientific activity: standardization of approaches to the evaluation of chemical methods of substance identification; validation of drug quality control techniques; synthesis and analysis of chemical compounds; development of new ion-selective electrodes; chemical-toxicological studies of organic compounds. Prospects for the development of the department include further optimization and modernization of the curricula in analytical chemistry, taking into account the experience of teaching this discipline at leading universities in Europe and the USA.
